Mathematics is one of the oldest academic subjects and is still very much alive and growing very fast. It considered very important in the learning and understanding of Science subjects in General. The advent of computers and data acquisition facilities has stretched the limits of what is possible in Mathematics to all branches of human endeavour. Mathematics is one of the most mature and well-developed disciplines of the basic sciences. The study of mathematics is not only exciting, but also important. Mathematics have an opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the society by helping to solve problems in such diverse fields as medicine, Biology, management, economics, computer sciences, physics, psychology, food sciences, agriculture, engineering and social sciences etc. The Department of mathematics, KIU Gilgit is established in 2002 and it is one of the pioneer Departments of KIU. Keeping in view the Contemporary era of technology, research and knowledge based society the department decided to stretch its arm by introducing new programs in Statistics (BS & M.Sc) from semester spring 2010. The Department provides services to the entire university, from under graduate students to graduate students in mathematics as well as other departments who need to upgrade the quantitative and mathematical skills of their students. Having highly qualified experienced and young talented faculty members, the department aims to establish and promote KIU as a leading institution for teaching and research in mathematical sciences both with in Pakistan and Internationally.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics aspires to the highest standards of excellence in teaching and service. The department strives to earn regional recognition for its expertise in the field of mathematics and the teaching of mathematics and Statistics. We will be a source for the promotion of problem-solving, analytical thinking and utilize technology. We will produce high-quality mathematics majors well prepared to enter the workforce or attend graduate school. We will provide students with individualized help in their studies and we intend to develop a program whereby students may obtain tutoring as needed to successfully complete their mathematics courses. The department will build upon its strengths for development of graduate programs and promotion of research in areas of need for the region in particular and for the country in general.
Mathematics and statistics are responses to the fundamental human endeavor to understand the world. Furthermore, modern technological society relies on developments in these disciplines. Consequently, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Karakoram International University, Gilgit, as in most universities, plays a vital and indispensable role in the lives of the students and faculty.
The Department’s mission is two-fold: To assist in integrating students into society by educating them in these fields; secondly, to build and foster an excellent faculty, which contributes to the development of mathematics and statistics and serves as a resource of mathematical expertise for the people of this area in particular and country in general.
