Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah Vice Chancellor KIU and renowned Civil Engineer along with Dr. Manzoor Ali HoD of Department of Physics and Engr. Hayat Baig defended the project proposal under Tech Development Fund at HEC. The proposed project is aimed at producing electricity and lift water from run of river through installing turbine and pump. The project will jointly launch with Baig and Baig Engineers Company Gilgit with an estimated cost of Rs. 21 Million. Out of total budget, HEC will contribute 14 Million and Baig Engineers will contribute 7 Million in form of consultancy and design expertise. The prototype of the project will be installed at Hunza River which will generate 10 KWh or lift 100000 gallons of water every day for irrigation, sanitation and other needs on campus. The project was highly appreciated by review team. Under the business plan, the team of KIU and B&B Engineering will produce 600 units in 10 years for various locations and departments of GB. The project will also pave the way for establishment of KIU Centre for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology (KIU- CREATe). This will be the first industrial project of KIU related to renewable project. Prof. Shah VC-KIU shared with review team that a large tract of barren land requires indigenous solution which are eco-friendly and cost effective. Under this project, commercial Open Channel Adjustable Turbine pumps/generators will be manufactured according to growing demands of irrigation and power generation in the region.
